《爱的教育》,原名《Cuore》,直译为《心》,是亚米契斯历经近十年时间写成。仅在意大利就印行了一百多个版本,销量近千万册,成为意大利无数家庭教育孩子的教材范本。
《爱的教育》以一位意大利小学生日记形式为主线,记述了主人公安利柯在三年级一学年中所经历、观察和感受到的一切,其间穿插了他的父母,姐姐写给他的话,以及老师给学生抄写的每月故事。作者亚米契斯大量描写人物的心理活动,通过他们颂扬爱的美德和高尚心灵。作者力图在每一篇日记中充分反映和展示人性的善良与纯洁,每一章节都把"爱"表现得精髓深入、淋漓尽致,大至国家、社会,民族的大我之爱,小至父母,师长,朋友间的小我之爱,处处扣人心弦、感人肺腑。

爱德蒙多·德·亚米契斯[EdemondoDeAmicis],生于意大利利古里亚大区因佩里亚省收奥内利亚的一个海滨城市,从小喜爱军旅生活,16岁进人莫德纳军事学院学习,1865年毕业后成为军官,1866年积极参加了意大利第三次独立战争。1868年发表处女作《军营生活》,并因此而成名。1870年罗马解放后,他放弃军事生涯,定居都灵,成为意大利主要报纸的记者,并从此开始从事专业文学创作。
亚米契斯早期曾周游世界,写下不少游记,如《西班牙》、《荷兰》、《伦敦记事》、《摩洛哥》、《君土坦丁堡》、《美国游记》、《西西里的回忆》等。1879-1889年这10年是亚米契斯创作的繁荣时期,他写了许多有关社会题材的作品,有《散文集》、《朋友们》、《爱的教育》、《大西洋上》等。他关注社会问题,继而投身政治,参加社会主义运动,1891年加入社会党,此后,他先后出版了《一个教师的小说》、《工人的教师》和《公共电车》等作品。

To-dayisthefirstdayofschool.Thesethreemonthsofvacationinthecountryhavepassedlikeadream.ThismorningmymotherconductedmetotheBarettischoolhousetohavemeenterforthethirdelementarycourse:Iwasthinkingofthecountryandwentunwillingly.Allthestreetswereswarmingwithboys:thetwobook-shopswerethrongedwithfathersandmotherswhowerepurchasingbags,portfolios,andcopy-books,andinfrontoftheschoolsomanypeoplehadcollected,thatthebeadleandthepolicemanfounditdifficulttokeeptheentrancedisencumbered.Nearthedoor,Ifeltmyselftouchedontheshoulder:itwasmymasterofthesecondclass,cheerful,asusual,andwithhisredhairruffled,andhesaidtome:-
"Soweareseparatedforever,Enrico?"
Iknewitperfectlywell,yetthesewordspainedme.Wemadeourwayinwithdifficulty.Ladies,gentlemen,womenofthepeople,workmen,officials,nuns,servants,allleadingboyswithonehand,andholdingthepromotionbooksintheother,filledtheanteroomandthestairs,makingsuchabuzzing,thatitseemedasthoughonewereenteringatheatre.Ibeheldagainwithpleasurethatlargeroomonthegroundfloor,withthedoorsleadingtothesevenclasses,whereIhadpassednearlyeverydayforthreeyears.Therewasathrong;theteachersweregoingandcoming.Myschoolmistressofthefirstupperclassgreetedmefromthedooroftheclass-room,andsaid:-
"Enrico,youaregoingtothefloorabovethisyear.Ishallneverseeyoupassbyanymore!"andshegazedsadlyatme.Thedirectorwassurroundedbywomenindistressbecausetherewasnoroomfortheirsons,anditstruckmethathisbeardwasalittlewhiterthanithadbeenlastyear.Ifoundtheboyshadgrowntallerandstouter.Onthegroundfloor,wherethedivisionshadalreadybeenmade,therewerelittlechildrenofthefirstandlowestsection,whodidnotwanttoentertheclass-rooms,andwhoresistedlikedonkeys:itwasnecessarytodragtheminbyforce,andsomeescapedfromthebenches;others,whentheysawtheirparentsdepart,begantocry,andtheparentshadtogobackandcomfortandreprimandthem,andtheteacherswereindespair.
MylittlebrotherwasplacedintheclassofMistressDelcati:IwasputwithMasterPerboni,upstairsonthefirstfloor.Atteno'clockwewereallinourclasses:fifty-fourofus;onlyfifteenorsixteenofmycompanionsofthesecondclass,amongthem,Derossi,theonewhoalwaysgetsthefirstprize.TheschoolseemedtomesosmallandgloomywhenIthoughtofthewoodsandthemountainswhereIhadpassedthesummer!Ithoughtagain,too,ofmymasterinthesecondclass,whowassogood,andwhoalwayssmiledatus,andwassosmallthatheseemedtobeoneofus,andIgrievedthatIshouldnolongerseehimthere,withhistumbledredhair.Ourteacheristall;hehasnobeard;hishairisgrayandlong;andhehasaperpendicularwrinkleonhisforehead:hehasabigvoice,andhelooksatusfixedly,oneaftertheother,asthoughhewerereadingourinmostthoughts;andheneversmiles.Isaidtomyself:"Thisismyfirstday.Thereareninemonthsmore.Whattoil,whatmonthlyexaminations,whatfatigue!"IreallyneededtoseemymotherwhenIcameout,andIrantokissherhand.Shesaidtome:-
"Courage,Enrico!wewillstudytogether."AndIreturnedhomecontent.ButInolongerhavemymaster,withhiskind,merrysmile,andschooldoesnotseempleasanttomeasitdidbefore.
