Thecrankcase(blow-by)gasesarerecycledastheengineisrunningbydrawingcleanfilteredairthroughtheairfilterandintothecrankcase.Astheairpassesthroughthecrankcase,itpicksupthecombustiongasesandcarriesthemoutofthecrankcase,throughtheoilseparator,throughthePCVvalveororifice,andintotheinductionsystem.Astheyentertheintakemanifold,theyaredrawnintothecombustionchamberwheretheyarereburned.ThemostcriticalcomponentinthesystemisthePCVvalvethatcontrolstheamountofgasesthatarerecycled.Atlowenginespeeds,thevalveispartiallyclosed,limitingtheflowofgases.Asenginespeedincreases,thevalveopenstoadmitgreaterquantitiesofairtotheintakemanifold.SomesystemsdonotuseaPCVvalve.Theysimplyusearestrictorororificeintheventilationhosetometerthecrankcasegases.IfthePCVvalve/orificebecomesblockedorplugged,thegasescannotbeventedfromthecrankcase.Sincet.heyareunderpressure,theywillfindtheirownwayoutofthecrankcase.Thisalternaterouteisusuallyaweakoilsealorgasketintheengine.Asthegasescapesbythegasket,itusuallycreatesanoilleak.Besidescausingoilleaks,acloggedPCVvalvealsoallowsthesegasestoremaininthecrankcaseforanextendedperiod,promotingtheformationofsludgeintheengine.EvaporativeEmissionControLSystemTheevaporativeemissioncontrolsystemisdesignedtopreventfueltankandcarburetorbowl(ifequipped)vaporsfrombeingemittedintotheatmosphere.Fuelvaporsareabsorbedandstoredbyafuelvaporcharcoalcanister.Thecanisterstoresthemuntilcertainengineconditionsaremetandthevaporscanbepurgedandburnedbytheengine.Thecharcoalcanister.purgecycleiscontrolleddifferentways:eitherbyathermostaticvacuumswitch,asolenoidorbyatimedvacuumsource.Thethermostaticswitchisinstalledinthecoolantpassageandpreventscanisterpurgewhentheengineisbelowacertaintemperature.Thesolenoidisusuallycontrolledbyacomputerandisusedonfeedbackcontrolledfuelsystems.Thecomputerdetermineswhencanisterpurgeisappropriate.Dependingonthesystem,thiscanbeengineoperatingtemperature,enginespeed,evaporativesystempressureoranycombinationofthese.Thetimedvacuumsourceusesamanifoldvacuumcontrolleddiaphragmtocontrolcanisterpurge.Whentheengineisrunning,fullmanifoldvacuumisappliedtothetoptubeofthepurgevalvewhichliftsthevalvediaphragmandopensthevalve.Aventlocatedinthefueltank,allowsfuelvaporstoflowtothecharcoalcanister.Atankpressurecontrolvalve,usedonsomehighaltitudeapplications,preventscanisterpurgewhentheengineisnotrunning.Thefueltankcapdoesnotnormallyventtotheatmosphere,butisdesignedtoprovidebothvacuumandpressurerelief.AirInjection,SystemIntroducingacontrolledamountofairintotheexhauststreampromotesfurtheroxidationofthegases.Thisinturnreducestheamountofcarbonmonoxideandhydrocarbons.Thecarbonmonoxideandhydrocarbonsareconvertedtocarbondioxideandwater,theharmlessby-productsofcombustion.Somesystemsuseanairpump,whileotherusenegativeexhaustpulsestodrawair
